The National Film School
Title Sequence and Visual Identity for the IADT NFS graduate film ‘Bestial Ones’ by Miles Davis Murphy. The outcome was a stark and restrained visual appearance using a symbol of the film to create intrigue.
Letters were lasercut from wood and then hung up on string to be videod and photographed. Creating motion using this natural method was in keeping with the punk aspect to the film. The cut out letters float and jitter about the frame creating a tense and slightly chaotic feel. It aims to represent the up in the air state of Fiadhs life as a decision looms on whether to stay with her son or to leave her home.
The shoe is a significant symbol in the film. At the start of the film, Fiadhs son Maithi draws a circle with the letter ‘M’ on her shoe. At the end of the film Fiadh notices this and ends up going back to him.
For consistency, the form of the shoe was taken from the form of the type choice ABC Camera by Dinamo. The typeface which features holes or ‘lighttraps’ were reminiscent of punk clothing. The cooler and raw blue and grey colours are drawn from the scenes when Fiadh is at home in the flat with her family while the punk-ish red and green relate to the escape and wild nights out.
